Spina Bifida Car 2.0

over the last few months, I have been working alongside the engineering department chair at my school to create a more advanced and refined car design. the goal of the new design is to remove the steering wheel allowing the whole car to be controlled by either a joystick or 4 buttons mounted in the car. the reason for removing the steering wheel completely is to allow kids with less upper body strength to also have independent mobility. The car is still a work in progress but so far it can be entirely controlled by a joystick, the buttons and joystick are swappable by a single plug and there is a parental override that allows that parent to take control using a remote. i hope to continue work on this project for the next few months.

Spina Bifida Car 1.0

The Spina Bifida car was crafted as part of a school project to modify toy cars with custom-fitted parts and electronics, enabling local children with Spina Bifida to move freely. Instead of opting for expensive electric wheelchairs, which may not be practical or affordable, especially for growing children. These customized cars serve as a temporary substitute until the child can use a full wheelchair. Spina bifida, a congenital condition where the spinal column doesn’t fully close during embryonic development, can range from mild to severe, potentially causing paralysis and other neurological complications. Personally, I designed a model used for nearly 20 of these custom cars. While the creation and modification process took weeks, the satisfaction of witnessing children gain freedom and mobility through my creation made it all worthwhile.
